IPL: Is It A Loss Making Venture?

IPL the much hyped and much criticized multi-billion dollar sporting league reported a net loss of 34 crores last year. With reams of publicity, and record amounts paid for telecasting rights and huge sponsorship deals you would wonder where did all the money go? Well, last year the sudden move to South Africa meant a big loss in stadium collections as these had to paid to the SA cricket stadiums as staging fees and the crowds did not turn up as they would in India. But, even that does not explain the big losses reported by IPL. This year should be much better with the return of the event to India and record number of deals that Lalit Modi has been signing up with host of companies including Google. Some of the teams may also turn the corner this year.

The bigger loss maker has been the Mumbai Indians – 20 crores. But for Ambani this is peanuts. The amount of exposure that the team gives the various group companies may offset the losses.

New Channels To Boycott IPL

The New broadcasters association of India which is an umbrella organisation representing all the major news broadcasters in the country have decided to boycott the IPL over the stringent conditions imposed by the SET Max and IPL for broadcasting the IPL news. Last years conditions were tough but this years were more stringent and there was no way the news broadcasters could agree to this. Added to this was the disdain shown by the representatives of IPL/SET Max who arrived late to meeting and brushed aside all objections. This is a repeat of last year. Let’s see who wins this year.

Sena Withdraws Threat To Aussies And Pakistanis

With many of its last few threats coming up cropper, it looks like wiser counsel prevailed at the Sena headquarters. It issued the following statement withdrawing its agitation against Aussie and Pakistani players.

“It is pointless to continue a stir based on patriotism. People aren’t interested in such issues. Indians living in Australia have said the Sena stir (against Australian cricketers) would make matters more difficult for them (Indians) back in Australia. Taking all this into consideration Sena has taken the decision. We don’t want Sainiks to stick their neck out on an issue which lacks universal appeal,” Thackeray said in his statement.

“Let Australian cricketers come here, let Pakistani cricketers come here. Let trained terrorists come here. Sena will do nothing,” Thackeray said.

Cuttack is in the catchment area of the Deccan Chargers. By alloting two matches to this Orissa city the IPL management is tryin to mollify the Deccan Chargers somewhat. The AP government is still not happy at the turn of events.
