IPL: Prime Target For Match Fixing

July 26th, 2008 · No Comments

The IPL is a prime target for match fixing. Well, no crystal balls needed for that. Even your 14-year old nephew will be able to tell you that. Now, that the ICC has come out with a report about the dangers of IPL, match fixing and its effect on other forms of cricket.

IPL has seen huge investments of money and ego. Big businessmen with loads of money to play with and even bigger egos to satisfy and who are known for their fabulous successes in the world of business where they make things happen are not going to sit and watch their teams being walloped just because a out-of-form cricketer did not bat well or dropped a catch.

Some, might let the cricketers take the big decisions and play according to their strengths others will involve themselves in every aspect even in those matters where they don’t have any expertise still others will quitely buy out the opposition. Scary scenario?

But very, very likely. Don’t you agree?

Cricket and match fixing are no strangers. Cricketers has always proved an easy target for match fixers.

Now, the only difference might be that the team owners fix the results over a bottle of finest wine in the most exclusive of clubs.

Why, this should seem strange to anyone is beyond me. IPL has been designed to provide maximum entertainment to the crowds that want instant gratification. It’s like a 3 hours bollywood movie and crowds mind you are looking for paisa vasool.

The first installment attracted the crowds inspite of poor performances by their teams – as they were there for the novelty value of seeing their local cricketers playing with the big names in the cricketing world. But, the second time around the poor performances and outright bad cricket isn’t going to be easily forgiven. The fans will want their pound of flesh and who better to provide it than the team owners!!
