A thrilling match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals

March 13th, 2010 · No Comments

Two masters of the game faced-off today. Though Sachin and Shane did not actually have much of a contest between the ball and the bat. It was the battle of minds that the two captains employed that made for a most absorbing match between Mumbai and Rajasthan.

A great innings from Tiwary steadied the Mumbai Indians and gave then a great total of 212. The Royals top-order did not fire as expected and first ball dismissal did not help their confidence level. But in came the swashbuckling hero – Yusuf Pathan. He changed the complexion of game by scoring the fastest IPL hundred in just 37 balls with several sixes and fours and set up a near victory for the Royals. But the dismissal of Pathan when he was on 100 and high on confidence due to simple run-out at the non-strikers end was rather unlucky for the team and Pathan. Dogra took off from where Pathan left-off and scored 2 sixes and a couple of fours before he was run-out. The later order tried their best but ended up just 6 runs short of victory.

The man-of-the-match for me is Yusuf Pathan all the way even though the Royals lost. I am in awe of this man.

IPL opening ceremony and Sony’s coverage

March 13th, 2010 · No Comments

I expected a more spectacular opening ceremony for a league billed as one of world’s best sports league

I am surprised Mr. Modi that a billion dollar league could only come up with such a show. Take for instance the second act – A fake ABBA band performing Mama Mia? Then came a lot of guys wearing traingular pyramid hats and dressed in white just standing around or jumping up and down doing god only knows what. My daughter said they looked Egyptian priests and my mother said they looked like nurses. Me, I thought they looked clueless.

Performers wearing tiny light bulbs and waving tube lights around, a Deepika Padukone going through the motions well, none of that was inspiring.

I liked the way the Stage came up and the best part of the show was the laser act . Now that was spectacular. Lionel Richie was good as always and the drum act was fine too.

The fire works display was nothing to write home about. I am sure Diwali in Mumbai is more spectacular that what we saw on IPL opening day. I would preferred if they had not done it at all. After all Ravi Shastri and Co were spouting something about going green, recycling rubbish and signing Earth pledges. A small gesture towards not having fireworks display would have gone a long way in promoting the green theme.

The live telecast of the opening ceremony of the IPL was not the best. I am not sure if it is the fault of my local cable wallah or the feed from Sony itself but as the camera angles changed the picture was all wavy and distorted. This happened repeatedly and I felt like switching off rather than watching such shoddy coverage.
