Remembering – And Being Thankful

by Dr.Mani on November 25, 2009

RE-TWEET IT!

November 26th. It’s Thanksgiving Day. It’s also the first anniversary of the dastardly 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai.

A paradox. What’s to feel thankful for?

For me, writing is cathartic. That day last year, I put into words the strong, powerful surge of feelings that ran rampant through the nerve-wracking 72-hour period. The result was 4 blog posts – this one, this one, this one and this one.

Even today, when I re-visited them and read those words again, a flood of deep sadness forces its way into my consciousness, as memories that would be better buried deep inside came back into sharp, startling, scary focus.

But today, I can deal with it a little more calmly than before. Because of one important thing that has happened in the year since 26/11/2008.

Words.

A book.

One that someone else wrote (probably as catharsis for him!)

Eckhart Tolle’s “A NEW EARTH”

It gave me a different, deeper perspective on life. One that stems from the philosophy:

“Everything is perfect – as it is!”

And that completely changes my thoughts and views on what to be thankful for and about. Distills it into one word, actually.

EVERYTHING.

Yes, I’m thankful for everything.

This week, two things happened.

I had someone who knows me only peripherally suggest that I’m a scammer and a “disreputable doctor” because of my fund-raising efforts on the Web to make heart surgery available for under-privileged kids.

I also had representatives of a local Rotary Club visit our hospital, and praise the work he saw being done – and pledge the support of a group of generous, caring people to help take it further.

One was nice. The other hurt.

But BOTH are perfect!

And so I’m thankful for both.

When you step back from what you’re obsessing over, when you create space around that tight knot of emotional reaction at your core, when you view events through a spiritual lens of consciousness… you begin to realize that perfection.

Appreciate it.

Be thankful for it.

And, at the same time, see how and why you couldn’t feel that way earlier, when the same events were viewed and experienced in a different way, from another platform…

One that’s centered on the ego.

Thank you. I needed this today. I haven’t experienced the same breadth of responses you mention in your post, but the voices of encouragement and harsh discouragement have been fighting for my attention.

I shall see them all as insights and opinions of people who, regardless of how I feel about their feedback, are people who took the time and cared enough to speak with me.

Just what the Dr. ordered! =)
