In all that Seth Godin says about the TV-Industrial complex, he talks about how the ‘old’ pattern was to buy mass media ads that made more money than they cost – so that companies could run more ads and keep repeating the cycle.
Today, we are MICRO-markets. And this approach may not work as well, if at all.
I am involved in a major way in the niche called ‘MMO-IM’ (make money online – Internet marketing). Like all niche markets, this one has some ‘big name’ players. And two of them are having product launches today.
I have NOT seen a single promotional message about them by email – and haven’t seen even one anywhere online that I chose not to view!
Yet there are no doubt hundreds of people spewing out thousands, if not MILLIONS, of marketing messages about these launches. $2,000 in affiliate commissions has that tendency to provoke knee-jerk reactions and regressive behavior towards “what once worked”.
If I am typical of this market (and it’s possible I’m not), then many prospective buyers are tuning out the marketing noise BEFORE it reaches them. This makes it ever more important to focus on YOUR micro-market, communicate with them, ENGAGE them in an interactive dialog, and sell to that closed, loyal even-if-small crowd.
The alternative is to despatch your marketing jingle to echo silently in the wilderness of what was once your ‘market’.
