Practice makes perfect – it applies to public speaking too
The public speaking expertise of American military officials came to fore when the Persian Gulf War broke out. Millions of Americans waited eagerly to hear the speeches and war updates delivered by military spokespersons. Apart from military expert public speaking skills are a pre-requisite for success in financial fields.
As a finance person takes up new and greater responsibilities, he/ she is bound to be faced by numerous public speaking assignments. Further growth in career depends highly on the ability to orate, handle meetings, motivate staff etc. The persuasive way in which the manager expresses his/ her plans for future growth makes them acceptable and respected.
Many managers, though experienced in handling meetings, feel scared to address a board meeting. But those who wish to grow to the top most positions in the corporate world should develop oratory skills not only to address the board but also to persuade the common public to invest in their company.
One of the common service industries which are always subject to public scrutiny is the health care industry. The CEO and COO of such corporations are often required to make introductions, deliver talks, answer questions of media persons etc. The way he talks will decide on the kind of respect that is created in the minds of the public.
