Improving Oratory skills - Part 3

Before reading this post read part 1 and part 2. We’ll continue from where we left in part 2..

Coherence is important
Keep the vocabulary of your talk simple and easily understandable. Don’t make it sound superfluous by unnecessary large words, headlines etc. Your audience are not there to hear you and become experts in the field.

Well organized

Getting ready for the talk is often not talked about very seriously. But this is one of the vitally significant elements which ascertain your triumph. Take up speaking assignments which give you time to get your speech ready, practice and work and rework on all aspects of your speech.

Giving an absorbing talk

The way you talk is what determines your success. All your hard work, practice, preparation etc are put to test at this point. Some methods to make your speech a runaway hit are given below.

· Lace your talk with instances to liven your topic

· Display positive movements and gestures, don’t deliver the entire talk standing in one place

· Use the right speed to talk, use pauses where necessary

· Modulate your voice as per the importance of your points

· Use placards, slides, pictures etc to illustrate your subject.

Improving Oratory skills - Part 2

Certainly almost everyone need to improve their Oratory skills. In part one we did look into a few points, let us continue from where we left…

Comprehend your end result:

It is very important to answer the five Ws and H of your speech. That is you need to sit down and think about what you are going to talk about? Who are your audience? Why they are interested in this subject? How will the presentation proceed? Where are you going to deliver this talk? etc.

Who are you addressing your talk? Their pursuits, beliefs and significant values? What is the group’s commonality with rest of the society, what are the unique features?

What is your message? Set yourself a stringent achievement task i.e. to ascertain whether you have effectively delivered what you had set out to speak about.

How is it possible to communicate your missive? Words and sentences you use is quite vital, select them with care and tailored to your listeners. Plan the start, body and end of your talk well in advance. If possible prepare some visual aids to drive your point home.

When? The talk should be timed well so that your reflections are appreciated and timely. Ensure that you lace your speech with pauses to let the matter sink in.

Where? This is the venue you are going to speak in. You need to be familiar with the hall, auditorium or wherever you are expected to address your listeners. Go there well in advance and customize the layout as per your comfort zone.

Why? You might attract lot of people to the venue but to make them your listeners you have to give a fair explanation as to why they should listen to you. What is their benefit from your talk, what is the value of your message, will they take home something of use to them?

Improving Oratory skills - Part 1

This topic is a bit long and quite deep and hence I decided to split this into smaller parts, so that it’s easier for me to deliver all that I plan to.

Reflect over the recent inspiring speech which is embedded in your mind. Is it easy to recall one or do you having to strain your mind to do so? It is unfortunate that most talks are not recallable and easily forgotten. This is a huge issue because primarily the speaker wanted to disseminate some information to audience including you.

Three primary aspects can be done to guarantee that your talk is fathomed and recalled frequently.

These aspects are quite commonly heard and quite uncomplicated:
• Fathom the objective of your talk
• Ensure simplicity and coherence of the speech
• Train yourself well
• Be as descriptive as possible when you present your talk
